100 year old Ladies Speak out on National Centenarian’s Day!
If you’re looking to live a long and healthy life, it makes sense that you’d ask a centenarian how to achieve that.
Research suggests that while genetic factors have a huge role in longevity, lifestyle plays a part, too — meaning it’s not all just luck of the draw. Allure spoke with women 100 years old and up, including 102-year-old runner Ida Keeling, about their secrets to good health — and some of them may surprise you.
The women did offer a few frequently given tips: get lots of sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly.
Keeling has followed less orthodox advice, too. “The doctor put me on a little Hennessy in 1972 because I had poor circulation,” she laughs in the video.
There is some research to suggest that light to moderate drinking may lower heart disease risk. (Another centenarian, meanwhile, says she never liked liquor.)
Be like a rubber band all over the place!
Keeling also extolled the virtues of stretching, advising, “Be like a rubber band all over the place!”
As for her diet, she says she consumes cod liver oil and orange juice every morning, plus enjoys apples and “all kind of vegetables.”
The most cited advice in the video? Stay active.
One centenarian says she tries to do some walking every day; another recalled doing Jack LaLanne’s workouts; another discussed her love of dancing. Exercise, Keeling says, is “the best medicine there is.”
